Business Consulting
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Several years ago a friend hired a consultant for a feasibility study in the telecommunications industry. The consultant went to work diligently identifying many aspects of the industry with pros and cons for the various concepts to be implemented. My friend paid the consultant for the completed work and decided to follow through based on the information provided. In the end, the consultant's information was so incomplete that the cost of creating the business was about ten times higher than the consultant indicated. As it turned out, the consultant wasn't really qualified to perform the job and my friend was out a considerable amount of money.
Don't let that happen to you. Take the time to do some research before you hire a consultant or pay someone to "check out" the consultant for you. Finding the right consultant can be a daunting task. Below are four steps to help find a good consultant.
1. Availability
Identify specific dates and times to meet and measure progress.
Will the consultant will be available AFTER the work is completed in case you need additional information or clarification.
2. Qualifications
Carefully review the consultant's credentials.
How long has the consultant been in business?
Is the consultant qualified for the job?
What references can the consultant provide?
3. Clearly defined expectations
Provide enough detail about your expected outcome as possible.
Be sure the consultant understands the company's goals and objectives.
Clarify what you don't want as well as what you are looking for.
4. Get everything in writing
Identify measurable milestones for partial payments as work progresses.
Get a confidentiality agreement to protect your business interests.
Identify a "drop dead date" in case work is milestones are not met.
Identify the recourse should the consultant fail to meet their obligation.
Be wary of consultants that want 50% or more "up front" to begin work.
