Can I get a loan?
In spite of what you hear, it is still difficult to borrow money from a bank for a startup business. Banks are not in the risk taking business...they are in the money making business. You will need significant collateral to get a small business loan through your bank.
What about the SBA loans?
The governments Small Business Administration loans are acquired through your bank. That doesn't mean you can not get a loan...it just means it will be difficult. The SBA guarantees the loan, but the banks are typically responsible for at least the first $50,000 or so. Banks are not in the risk taking business, they are there to make a profit. It is difficult to get banks to take the risk on the first $50,000.
What about venture capitalists?
Investors typically want a major piece of the pie either in ownership or interest...and sometimes both. Be careful BEFORE you acquire your funding from private investors, also known as venture capitalists. They are in the business of making money. Check out anyone you might get startup money from BEFORE you accept the funds.
Bootstrapping
Bootstrapping is using your own money/resources and it is the best way to start your business. You can also consider partnering with one or more other people to share in the cost and/or the work.
